COMMENCING HOLDS & ALIGNMENTS
A dance
script prescribes how a dance is to be performed.
The table below lists Slow Waltz dances performed at Palm Beach Share & Care
and details the commencing hold and alignment as prescribed by the script for that dance.
NB: on completing a sequence, dancers must be ready to commence another sequence, so logically, the closing hold / alignment is the same as the commencing hold / alignment.
Slow/Modern/English Waltz (dance tempo 28-32bpm)
Man
commences with weight on the RF, stepping forward on the LF [Lady’s weight on
LF, stepping back on the RF].
There are three exceptions: Opus Five Waltz and St Valentine’s Waltz
where the opposite applies to both the Man and the Lady; Anna-Lisa Waltz - Lady steps forward on the RF.

Hold
– are all the same hold, just a different term to describe it.
There would seem to be no rule as to which term to use for this Hold;
choreographers have used all of them when specifying the Hold to be used for
the above listed dances.
It would appear to simply be the choreographer’s
preference.
